Unwavering Solidarity with Antifascists Facing Repression
The European Left reaffirms its solidarity with antifascist resistance in Hungary, where democratic rights and freedoms are being increasingly undermined by the Orbán government. The recent decision by the Hungarian police to ban solidarity demonstrations in Budapest for a German antifascist marks a serious escalation in the repression of political dissent.
This ban is the latest in a series of attempts by the Orbán regime to suppress protests against what has been widely criticised as a show trial against Maja, a German antifascist activist. While earlier demonstrations were obstructed through police interference — including the cutting off of sound systems — authorities have now moved to a complete prohibition of protests. The ban is justified by reference to the Hungarian government’s so-called “Antifa” decree, which accuses Antifa of supporting terrorism and seeks to outlaw its activities. This represents a dangerous criminalisation of antifascist activism and peaceful protest.
The organisers of the solidarity demonstrations have taken their case to court and are pursuing all legal avenues to secure Maja’s release and a fair, transparent investigation. Their efforts highlight the urgent need to defend the right to protest and the rule of law in Hungary.

The Hungarian Workers’ Party 2006, a member organisation of the European Left, has expressed its support for the antifascists involved and has strongly condemned the ban on the solidarity demonstrations. The European Left fully shares this position and will continue to raise the issue at European and international level.
As previously stated in our publications, the European Left will not remain silent in the face of political persecution. We stand with all those resisting fascism in Hungary and across Europe, and we remain committed to defending human rights, democratic freedoms, and antifascist values.
