The Hague Group: A Global Stand for Justice

Global South Nations Take Collective Action to seek justice Against Israeli Violations

A historic coalition of nine nations has formed The Hague Group, calling for global action against Israel’s violations of international law. With support from the Party of the European Left, this initiative seeks to enforce accountability, implement an arms embargo, and uphold Palestinian self-determination.

On 31 January 2025, nine nations—Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal, and South Africa—came together to form The Hague Group, convened by the Progressive International. This historic alliance, built on the legacy of anti-Apartheid coalitions, aims to take collective action against Israel’s continued violations of international law and the UN Charter
In their founding declaration, these nations pledged to:

Hold Israel accountable for its breaches of international law and, where applicable, enforce ICC warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant
Enforce an arms embargo by preventing the export and transfer of weapons and related equipment to Israel.
Block vessels carrying jet fuel or weaponry to Israel from using their ports.

The Party of the European Left has endorsed this initiative, emphasizing the need for global action against Israel’s genocidal policies. European Left President Walter Baier, speaking at the inaugural event, condemned efforts to silence criticism of Israel, stating:
“It is intolerable and shameless to defame as anti-Semites all those who have called for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and for a just peace based on UN resolutions. The achievement of national self-determination for the Palestinians is just as just as the overcoming of apartheid in South Africa was in its time.”

The Hague Group’s formation comes in response to the International Court of Justice’s ruling in the South Africa v. Israel case, which called for the prevention of genocide against the Palestinian people. These nations are committed to implementing effective measures to end the Israeli occupation and remove obstacles to Palestinian self-determination.

At a time when world leaders escalate attacks against international justice institutions, including the sanctions against the International Criminal Court, The Hague Group stands as a vital force for accountability and collective resistance. The coalition aims to expand its membership, push for bold new measures, and ensure that the international community no longer turns a blind eye to Israel’s crimes.
