Stop the illegal US – Israel war on Iran
STATEMENT OF THE EUROPEAN LEFT
The European Left Party strongly condemns the military attacks carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran. These actions constitute a clear violation of international law and are politically indefensible. Peaceful and diplomatic solutions are possible. Instead, war is chosen.
The justification of the attacks as a preventive war is one of a series of so called “preventive wars” that have brought destruction and chaos to Iraq, Libya and Lebanon.
Under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump, a dangerous escalation is being pursued that risks plunging the region into further chaos. These strikes are an illegal act of aggression, a violation of the United Nations Charter, which follows previous violations in Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela and Cuba.
Such actions reflect the conduct of rogue states and endanger global security.
Our solidarity goes not with the regime but with the brave Iranian people, especially the women’s movement who resists repression and fights for democracy. Sanctions which have long caused hardship the Iranian people must end. Sanctions against any country with trade with Iran must stop.
It is for the Iranian people alone to determine their country’s future. We stand with international law, sovereignty, and the fundamental principle that no state has the right to bomb another with impunity.
We are deeply concerned by the statements from the president of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas in the name of the European Union, which seems to justify this act of aggression. By declaring that the EU remains in contact with one of the attacking parties, the European Union risks openly aligning itself with escalation rather than peace.
We urge EU leaders to change course immediately. The European Union must unequivocally condemn this flagrant violation of international law and pursue an independent foreign policy grounded in justice, sovereignty, multilateralism, and peace.
The European Left Party calls for de-escalation, diplomacy, the immediate cessation of hostilities and diplomacy.
