Statement on 50th Anniversary fascist coup d’etat in Cyprus
This 2024 represents the 50th anniversary of the fascist coup d’état of the Greek Junta and EOKA B and the illegal Turkish invasion of the island. 50 years later Cyprus is still a divided country and Turkey continues to violate international law by illegally occupying 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, and Cypriot people continue to suffer this flagrant violation of their human rights.
The European Left stands in solidarity with the Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, in their struggle for the liberation and reunification of the island and demands the end to Turkey’s military occupation. In this regard, the European Union must also encourage action, not only by words but also by initiatives, forcing the government of Ankara to face up to its responsibility.
The European Left advocates for the liberation and reunification of the island on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality, as this is set out in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, with a single sovereignty, a single international legal personality and a single citizenship, that will ensure a peaceful coexistence of all Cypriots.
