Solidarity Statement with MK Ayman Odeh, Member of Knesset

Your Excellencies,

On behalf of the Party of the European Left (EL), we wish to formally express our profound concern regarding the Israeli authorities’ recent threats to expel Member of Knesset Ayman Odeh from the Israeli Parliament. Such actions represent a direct assault on democratic principles and the fundamental right to political representation.

MK Odeh has long been a tireless advocate for peace, reconciliation, an end to the Israeli occupation, striving to bridge divides between Israelis and Palestinians. His expulsion would silence a critical voice for justice and dialogue, a brave call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, an end to the occupation, and a political solution between Israelis and Palestinians.

The European Left firmly believes in the inviolability of democratic institutions and free speech, especially for elected representatives. Targeting MK Odeh for his principled opposition to violence sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the legitimacy of parliamentary democracy itself.

We exhort you to:

  1. Publicly condemn this undemocratic threat and urge all members of the Knesset to reject and
    oppose the petition for MK Odeh’s expulsion;
  2. Call for international scrutiny of Israel’s adherence to democratic norms and international law;
  3. Reaffirm the EU’s commitment to protecting elected officials’ rights, as well as the principles of democracy, pluralism, and freedom of expression everywhere.

    In solidarity, we stand with MK Odeh and all those working for a just and peaceful resolution to the conflict. We trust you will lend your voice to this urgent matter.

    Respectfully yours,

    Walter Baier
    President of the Party of the European Left

    Inger Johansen
    Vice President of the Party of the European Left in charge of Middle East and Northern Africa affairs

    Maite Mola
    Responsible of the International Relations of the Party of the European Left
