No US Blackmail: Defend Cuba at the UN

STATEMENT OF THE EUROPEAN LEFT

The European Left Party Denounces US Pressure and Blackmail Aimed at Preventing Another UN Condemnation of the Blockade Against Cuba.

The European Left Party (EL) strongly condemns the pressure and diplomatic blackmail being exerted by the Donald Trump administration, through its Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on various governments in an attempt to influence their votes at the United Nations General Assembly on 28 October and prevent another international condemnation of the blockade against Cuba.

We consider it unacceptable for the United States to seek to impose its will on other countries through threats, political pressure and economic coercion, in violation of the principles of sovereignty, sovereign equality of states and the right of peoples to self-determination enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

This offensive constitutes yet another attack on multilateralism and international law, adding to the intensification of the criminal and genocidal economic, commercial, financial and energy blockade imposed on Cuba for more than six decades, whose consequences directly affect the living conditions of the Cuban people.

The European Left Party calls on all governments, particularly the Member States of the European Union, to resist Washington’s pressure and firmly support the United Nations resolution demanding an end to the blockade.

We reaffirm our solidarity with the Cuban people and demand the immediate, total and unconditional lifting of the blockade, an end to all unilateral coercive measures, and full respect for Cuba’s sovereignty.

The international community cannot allow blackmail to replace international law, nor the will of a single power to prevail over the sovereignty of peoples.
