Guatemala: Freedom for Leocadio Juracán

STATEMENT BY THE LATIN AMERICAN WORKING GROUP

The Party of the European Left condemns the arrest of Leocadio Juracán, which occurred on August 13th at La Aurora Airport in Guatemala City.

A renowned community leader, Leocadio Juracán was the general coordinator of the Peasant Committee of the Highlands (Comité Campesino del Altiplano) and a member of congress for the Convergence party.

We denounce that this arrest is part of a strategy of persecution against progressive and grassroots forces, carried out by reactionary and right-wing sectors and their operatives within the judicial system.

We join the calls demanding the immediate release of Leocadio Juracán and the end of the legal complaints against him.

The widespread use of the judicial apparatus against social and political leaders and human rights defenders must stop. The restoration of the judicial system is an essential task for democracy and social progress in Guatemala.

The Party of the European Left urges the European Union to speak out regarding this serious event, both in bilateral relations and before international bodies, and to actively utilize the human rights clause of the Free Trade Agreement with Central America, which was ratified by Guatemala, to effectively protect social leaders and human rights defenders in Guatemala.
