European Left Condemns Repression in Serbia
Statement by Walter Baier, President of the European Left
The European Left stands with the people of Serbia, condemning EU complacency toward repression and prioritization of profit over democracy.
The regime of Aleksandar Vučić continues to escalate violence and intensify social conflict in Serbia. Citizens suffering from police repression, universities with threatened autonomy, independent media under constant pressure, and education workers losing their jobs are all under attack.
The European Union, while invoking democratic values, has for years actively backed the authoritarian leader in Belgrade. Particularly scandalous is its support for the lithium mining project, which has been placed on the EU’s list of strategic raw materials, despite massive opposition from Serbian citizens.
How can the EU speak of democracy while openly siding with profit and ignoring the will of the people?

The European Left firmly stands with the people of Serbia, who for months have bravely shown what the struggle for freedom and democracy looks like. What we need is a Europe that is social, democratic, and based on solidarity — not a continent that turns certain countries into colonies for resource extraction and the exploitation of cheap labour.
Our message is clear: the struggle of the people of Serbia today is also the struggle for the future of all Europe.
