From November 8–10, 2024, Budapest became the beating heart of progressive Europe as the 8th European Forum of Left, Green, and Progressive Forces gathered at the historic seat of the Hungarian Metalworkers’ Federation. This venue, rooted in trade union traditions, set the stage for vital debates on the future of Europe. Our heartfelt thanks go to the Workers’ Party of Hungary 2006 and the Yes Solidarity for Hungary Movement for hosting this essential gathering.
In the face of a rising far-right tide across Europe, the Forum reaffirmed the power of solidarity and collective action. It was a space for trade unionists, activists, and political leaders to unite and chart an alternative path centred on justice, democracy, and sustainability. Organizations from across the left, green, and progressive families—Party of the European Left, ETUC, Young European Greens (FYEG), transform! europe, the Green European Foundation (GEF), and the Federation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and others—played a key role, reflecting the breadth and depth of this united front.
At the Forum, the assemblies brought the Party of the European Left’s commitment to tackling key challenges to the fore. Trade Unionists analyzed the devastating effects of deindustrialization on Eastern European workers, while feminists rallied against the far-right’s attacks on women’s rights, highlighting the need for bold demands. The cultural assembly emphasized the power of art and storytelling in dismantling far-right narratives. Plenaries addressed critical themes, from resisting authoritarianism and austerity to fostering peace in a multipolar world and uniting the left. Workshops deepened these discussions, with youth perspectives on militarization, stateless nations’ sovereignty, and Europe’s responsibility in the Middle East.
The Final Declaration call for a joint commitment to peace and the fight for an alternative to austerity policies.
