Defending Democracy: United Against the Far Right
On 14–15 November, Barcelona hosted the Alliance for Peace and Democracy – International Forum Against the Far Right, organised by Fundació Neus Català, a member of the transform! europe network, in cooperation with transform! europe and the Party of the European Left.
At a time of growing political polarisation and democratic backsliding across Europe and beyond, the forum offered a space for cross-border dialogue, analysis, and collective strategy building. Over two days, participants explored the political, social, and cultural drivers of far-right movements and discussed democratic responses grounded in peace, social justice, and inclusion.
The programme included thematic panels and discussions addressing the impact of authoritarian and nationalist forces on democratic institutions, civic freedoms, and social cohesion, as well as the role of grassroots mobilisation, culture, and education in resisting exclusionary politics.
The forum aimed to strengthen alliances across movements and countries, encourage the exchange of experiences, and support coordinated action.
The Alliance for Peace and Democracy took place at a critical moment for European and global civil society, reaffirming the commitment of progressive forces to defend democracy, promote peace, and build resilient, inclusive societies.
