Celebrate 100 Years of Theodorakis’ Unrivaled Legacy
Honoring a Titan of Music, Resistance, and the Greek Left
Today (July 29th), we commemorate 100 years since the birth of Mikis Theodorakis — a titan of Greek music and a tireless fighter for democracy, justice, and the dignity of the people.
His life was inseparably intertwined with the struggles of the Greek and European left — from resistance against fascism and dictatorship to his lifelong commitment to popular unity and social emancipation. Through his compositions, he gave voice to the pain, hopes, and dreams of the oppressed, transforming poetry into anthem and music into a call to action.
Theodorakis never separated art from politics. His melodies, rooted in the soul of the people, carried messages of liberation and solidarity that resonated across generations and borders.
Theodorakis’s unique music and lyrics will always resonate with the peoples’ struggles for a more just and humane world.

Mikis Theodorakis was a man larger than life. His artistic genius, musical charisma and unsatial creativity were matching his sparkling plethoric personality. Not only did he become one of the most acclaimed and recorded artists internationally, but both his artistic and political presence deeply influenced the modern history of Greece as well as the political uprising and social struggles of the people, the Left and democratic forces, both nationwide and on a broader scale. From a very early age, all along a significant part of his adulthood, he had felt the harsh if not torturous consequences of his prominent enlistment in the Left. Even though some of his political choices and public statements – mostly during the last years of his tumultuous life – had been controversial, he would always be cherished as one of the most illustrious — both artistically, socially and politically — influential personalities of the 20th century. As for the Greeks, he would always remain a rare national treasure.
