Solidarity With Lebanon: A Call for Ceasefire and Peace
In Lebanon, the dire humanitarian crisis – with over 1,000,000 forced displaced people out of a total population of just under 6 million, at the peak of the war with about half of them still displaced now, and evacuation orders extending right into the heart of the capital, Beirut – is becoming increasingly untenable. It is a war that makes no exceptions, not even for hospitals, schools or buildings that are already being used as shelters.
International law, including the United Nations Charter, the Fourth Geneva Convention and numerous Security Council resolutions, is increasingly being treated as a dead letter in this part of the world, where a state’s sovereignty no longer holds any weight in the face of Israel’s attacks.
The silence of the international community, despite the presence of the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon – whose integrity is increasingly at risk – amounts to complicity.
In this context, EL expresses its deep solidarity with the people of Lebanon and with the Lebanese Communist Party, calling for a real ceasefire, an end to hostilities, full withdrawal of occupation forces, and respect for Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
At the request of the Lebanese Communist Party, we are sharing a crowdfunding link for supporting the displaced people and victims of war to its members and affiliates, with projects aimed at providing housing and support for around 3,000 families of Communist Party members and friends from the South.
