Trump’s Midterm Defeat: European Left Reacts

The Party of the European Left celebrates the resounding defeat of Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the US midterm elections. The loss of control of both chambers of Congress represents a heavy blow to his authoritarian, reactionary, and imperialist project.

After Lula’s popular victory in Brazil, the American people have also shown that the far right can be defeated. The policies of war, imperialist aggression, persecution of migrants, attacks on social rights, the growing economic hardship faced by a large section of the population, and contempt for international law are meeting growing popular resistance. The working class, living in worsening social conditions, played a decisive role in this result: polls showed that a large majority of voters were angry about the economic and social situation.

The fact that Indigenous, Muslim, and African American candidates, as well as an increasing number of women, have been elected by vast majorities, thanks to the support of various groups of voters, is a decisive step against racism, xenophobia and misogyny, the pillars of the MAGA political and cultural narrative.

We especially celebrate the advance of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), our sister organisation and a reference point in the United States, which has succeeded in electing six new representatives to Congress, reaching a total of eight.

We extend our warmest congratulations to its members and representatives for this historic victory, which demonstrates the growth of a socialist alternative against the power of large corporations and the policies of the far right.

This defeat transcends US borders. It is a message of hope for the peoples fighting against fascism, imperialism and reactionary forces around the world.

From the Party of the European Left, we reaffirm our internationalist commitment to peace, social justice, the sovereignty of peoples, and the construction of a socialist alternative.
