European Left Condemns Threats Against Hammami
STATEMENT OF THE EUROPEAN LEFT
Calls on Tunisia to protect opposition leaders and defend democratic freedoms.
The European Left Party expresses its strongest condemnation of the death threats directed at Hamma Hammami, General Secretary of the Tunisian Workers’ Party, and at other opposition figures, which were broadcast in an extremely violent video.
We express our full solidarity with Hamma Hammami, his family and the Workers’ Party as a whole. No political differences can justify intimidation, incitement to hatred or threats against those who are legitimately exercising their right to express critical views.
We call on the Tunisian authorities to take all necessary measures immediately to ensure their safety, to conduct a thorough investigation into the source of these threats, and to hold those responsible to account. Impunity for such acts fuels political violence and further erodes democratic freedoms.
Freedom of expression, political pluralism and the right of opposition groups to carry out their activities without persecution or threats must be fully respected.
The European Left Party will stand alongside the democratic, progressive and left-wing forces in Tunisia in their struggle for freedom, social justice and the defence of fundamental rights.
