The German revolution of 1918 ended the First World War and went down in history as the November Revolution. Today we commemorate the 103rd anniversary of the event. Heinz Bierbaum, the President of the European Left, explains:

“The revolution of 1918/19 was the largest mass movement in German history. It ended the war and swept away the monarchy. The November Revolution, whose left wing strove for a socialist orientation, opened the door to democracy. Women’s suffrage, the separation of state and church, the eight-hour day, union participation – all these are achievements rooted in the struggle. The memory of the November Revolution is for us a commitment to fight for a more socially just society, a society of democratic socialism.”
