Far from the realities of life and daily struggles of Europeans, the European Commission used the State of the Union to portray an out of touch picture of reality, boasting about its achievements. Heinz Bierbaum, the President of the European Left, comments:
“In her speech on the state of the EU, the President of the EU Commission von der Leyen does not address the concerns of the citizens. A grave omission. Whatever measures are now being planned in Brussels to overcome the energy crisis and bring prices back down to a tolerable level – it’s coming late.
“ She said barely anything on the global food crisis, as working people struggle to survive during this ongoing pandemic while a few corporate food giants continue to make huge profits.
“Instead, we saw how she instrumentalized Ukraine to blame the war for the rising prices, while the failures of the European Commission to lift us from the post pandemic recession are left unsaid. The EL does not accept the notion that more money should be invested in the armaments.
We need to fund the people and not the war industry!”
