On June 24, the Supreme Court of the US overturned the law about the right for abortion that has been in force since 1973. Heinz Bierbaum, President of the Party of the European Left, and Maite Mola, First Vice President, comment:
“The Supreme Court’s decision will have real and devastating consequences, especially for younger, Black, Latina, and low-income women and their families. Some Republican governed US states have already announced their intentions to forbid abortions and put under severe punishment.
Over the past decade abortion rights has come under attack in a lot of countries but at the same time abortion rights movements have won victories by taking to the streets, closing ranks with all kinds of progressive and liberal minded people and through international solidarity! This anti humanitarian decision of the US Supreme Court is a signal: This fight is not over by far!
President Biden once again has proved himself unwilling to take action in time to defend the rights of millions of Americans. We demand from the US administration to take all possible legal and political action to reestablish the law of free abortion that has been in force for 50 years and saved thousands of lives and the dignity of millions of women. The US administration has – although being fully aware of the unfavourable composition of the Supreme Court- turned their heads vis-à-vis the looming reactionary decision and neglected to develop successful counter strategies.
We have deep respect for the courageous and tireless efforts of the women’s rights movements, the democratic forces of the US, as well as doctors and nurses who are aware of the devastating and dangerous consequences for the health and well-being of millions of people. We salute the hundreds of thousands who already taken to the streets in protest and in protection of women’s rights, and we want to express that we stand firmly all these people in defence of a fundamental human right. Women of the United States, we are sending you our solidarity from Europe.”
