The Congress of the Party of the European Left (EL) will be held in Vienna, from the 9th until the 11th of December 2022. Hosted with support from the KPÖ and it brings together representatives of the left European parties, international guests, trade unionists, social movements, and other representatives. The Congress will elect a new Presidency and leadership of the EL and adopt a new Political Document – a programme and a guideline for the three upcoming years.
Peace, Bread and Roses is the slogan of the upcoming EL Congress. “It sums up our main objective for the next few years: the creation of a social, ecological, democratic and peaceful world,“ says Heinz Bierbaum, the President of the European Left.
“We are facing profound economic, social and political upheavals caused in particular by the ecological challenges like climate change. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which caused the war, has had an enormous additional impact. First the pandemic, now the war: both exacerbate the already existing multiple crises. To combat the challenges, and build a better future for all, the Left in all of its diversity must rediscover internationalism. We need future-oriented projects and crisis-proof policy in the fight against global phenomena like inequality and climate change” says Heinz Bierbaum.
“In many places in Europe the shift to the right as a result of years of austerity policies becomes evident and brings devastation. This shows: if you want Europe, you have to take it from the rich and the corporations. Keeping up the status quo destroys our democracy” Martin Schirdewan, the Co-President of the Left in the European Parliament states. “Ahead of the European election we need a united European Left, who is able to carry out a common strategic answer to the ongoing crisis of capitalism. We need more strategic integration and activities to face the common challenges” he concludes.
Our message remains clear: for Peace, Bread and Roses!
