Solidarity with Polish Women
The Executive Board of the Party of the European Left (EL) joins the Polish women today in their ‘Black Friday Protest’ against the ‚Stop abortion’ bill and calls for European solidarity in the fight for guaranteeing women’s rights across Europe.
The EL protest this contentious ‘Stop Abortion’ bill, that was proposed by conservative groups in collaboration with the Polish catholic church.
Poland at present already has some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe alongside Malta and Ireland and the new bill proposes to take it even further by outlawing abortions carried out because of congenital disorder of the fetus, estimated to be about 95 percent of legal abortions in Poland.
We call upon solidarity with Polish women! Solidarity is our weapon!
With the strengthening of extreme right-wing forces in Europe, the diversity of family designs and associated therewith sexual self-determination as well as sexual and reproductive rights come under pressure.
In right-wing family ideology, a dangerous alliance is being formed consisting of Christian fundamentalists and diverse shades of the old and new right, trying to get on the offensive in parliaments with legislative means and also with eg. ‚demonstrations for all‘ and ‚marches for life‘. However, we experience encouraging resistance, the formation of alliances and diverse actions in the streets. As part of this resistance, the EL rejects the restrictive politics and measures against women‘s right to abortion everywhere in Europe, stands in solidarity with those actively opposing these measures and calls on its member, observer and partner parties to campaign for freedom of choice and the decriminalization of pregnancy termination.
It is time to make abortion legal, safe and accessible in every country, so that the right to health is a reality for every woman, regardless of age, race, income or geography.
