Concerning the attack in Berlin Gregor Gysi, President of the Party of the European Left (EL) states:

This terrible attack in Berlin with leaving many death and injured deeply devastates us all.

One cannot fathom how hard this attack hits the relatives and friends of the murdered and injured.

We are all empathizing with them.

Christmas is normally a festivity of love and solidarity – and it should stay like that.

The people have the right to visit public events, like Christmas markets, safely and unharmed.

The Party of the European Left (EL) condemns the decision by the Brazilian Senate to impeach President Dilma Rousseff. This dismissal is the latest attempt to give legitimacy to the coup d’état which has been set up for months, true crime against democracy committed by the most corrupt sectors of Brazilian politics.

The Party of the European Left expresses its joy for the signing of the "Final agreement for the termination of conflict and the construction of a stable and durable peace", signed in La Havana, Cuba the 24th of August 2016 between the FARC-EP and the Colombian government.

The Party of the European Left condemns the attack perpetrated last night in the airport of Istanbul, already claimed by the Islamic Army, that caused 36 deaths and more than 140 people injured. We send our condolences and solidarity to families, friends and all affected by this attack, and by extension to all Turkish people who suffered strong terrorist attacks in the past years. The biggest one occurred in October 2015 against pacifist and progressive forces claiming for peace in Ankara. More than 200 people were killed.

 

The Party of the European Left salutes de commitment expressed by the National Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on the past 23rd of June, to proscribe “the use of weapons in the exercise of politics and work together to achieve a national consensus in which all political, economic and social sectors engage in an exercise of politics in which the values of democracy, the interchange of ideas and civilized debate prevail”.

This Wednesday, the 7th January, France, its republican values coming from "Les Lumières" (Enlightment), has been struck wholeheartedly through the barbarian attack against the newspaper Charlie Hebdo by a military trained commando justifying ifs criminal gesture as a "vengeance for the prophet". Twelve persons have been savagely assassined, amongst them talented figures of the French satire, dissonant and impertinent voices.
