HONDURAS: Returning to the coup of 2009 - Juan Orlando Hernández out !
More than two weeks after the elections (November 26), the Superior Electoral Court (Tribunal Superior Electoral, TSE) has not named a winner still. The candidate of the center-left Alliance Against the Dictatorship, Salvador Nasralla, has faced the current President, Juan Orlando Hernández and the Liberal Party which is in a very distant third position. According to all the information and evidence, the elections have been won by Nasralla.
Hernández has been the expression of the interests behind the coup in 2009, he has redesigned the State, achieving a concentration of power and economic gains through corruption, increasing the role of the military, and limiting the rights of majorities and humans rights in general. In addition, he has full control of the legal system and the TSE.
The coup was consolidated through spurious elections in 2009 and in 2013 with the support of the United States (USA) and of the European Union (EU). This time the electoral fraud - evidenced, for example, by the change of results in favour of Juan Orlando Hernández after a blackout in the computer system of the TSE - has been so evident that even electoral observers from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the EU have been forced to express themselves. However, the US embassy is manoeuvring to ensure that Juan Orlando Hernández remains in power or causes a breach in the Alliance.
The repression towards the protests against the fraud has meant a state of siege and more than a dozen deaths caused by the military. Facing the repression, trade-unions, social, youth organizations and others - including the National Popular Resistance Front (Frente Nacional de Resistencia Popular, FNRP) and the National Convergence Against Continuity (Convergencia Nacional Contra el Continuismo) - have initiated strikes and street protests in every part of the country.
We also want to emphasize the unconstitutionality of the re-election of Juan Orlando Hernández and demand that the European Union does not end up by supporting the position of the US embassy and follow its critical work through the Electoral Observation Mission. At the same time, we want to express our support and solidarity with social organizations, the FNRP and the Freedom and Refoundation Party (LIBRE) in protest against the regime of Juan Orlando Hernández.
The Latin America and the Caribbean Working Group of the Party of the European Left (EL) expresses its support to the demands of a total recount of the votes, the abolition of the illegal state of siege, the updating of the electoral register, the reorganization of the TSE and its data transmission system.
