The Party of the European Left condemns all violence that is taking place in Bolivia

Statement of Obey Ament (member of the Latin America working group): The people of Bolivia face a real «uprising of the powerful». Since the election of president Evo Morales, the most reactionary sectors of this country try by all means, violence included, to defeat the reforms that the Bolivian people need.

After having tried to decree the autonomy of the regions they control, the right-wing with the support of the US, launched an offensive with as its aim the destabilization of the country and the change of the democratically elected government in 2005.

The Party of the European Left condemns all violence that is taking place in Bolivia, the destructions of public buildings and gaz installations as well as the brutal repression used by the opposition regional governments against the people’s mobilization in favour of the progressive government of Evo Morales. This repression has already made hundreds of wounded and tens of deaths.

The Party of the European Left calls the European Union to express its condemnation of destabilization tentative happening in Bolivia that could precipitate the country into a civil war and any external influence aiming to violence and the questioning of a democratically elected government.
