UKRAINE: THE EL IN FAVOUR OF STRENGTHENING DEMOCRATIC CONDITIONS TO SOLVE THE CRISIS
The current crisis in Ukraine, due to the government’s refusal - under the pressure of Russia - to sign the Association Agreement with the EU , requires urgent measures to be taken by both, the government as well as the EU and Russia.
If the EU wants to maintain its proposal for an agreement with Ukraine, it must be changed to a helpful pact for the Ukrainian workers and citizens and not through an expansion of the markets with an empty cooperation fund as it is envisaged today. The EU as well as Russia must respect the principle of non-interference.
The government made a big political mistake not to organise a popular consultation on this agreement proposal. It would have been the only way to affirm the independence and sovereignty of the country, and to decide democratically on this main issue for its future.
We condemn repression and all violence in the streets. We are concerned with the revival of extreme right wing groups taking advantage of the atmosphere of social unrest, and the measures taken by the government limiting human rights of expression and demonstration.
Democracy and peaceful solution remains the good path. In this sense, we appreciate the proposals advanced by the Communist Party of Ukraine asking for a referendum in order to specify the path of foreign cooperations, to approve a democratic reform reaffirming the parliamentarian nature of the regime, strengthening powers of local assemblies, a new electoral law guaranteeing the proportional system and a justice reform to ensure a fair electoral system.
